Research notes move into the search screen
The change to Gemini Notebook goes beyond a new name.
On August 22, 2026, Google announced from its official account that it has rolled out the upgraded Notebook experience to all users. The same post said you can also access notebooks from AI Mode in Google Search. Official post
NotebookLM used to be a standalone research tool where you gather sources and ask questions. It is now clear that those notes are extending into the Gemini app and Google Search.
Separate the rollout from the advanced features
Google's official product guide describes Gemini Notebook as the new name for NotebookLM. Notebooks sync with the Gemini app, and their reach widens within the search ecosystem. Google's official guide
However, a full rollout does not mean every feature is available at the same time.
Google introduced a secure cloud computer that helps write and run source-grounded code. According to the official guide, this feature became available first to some Ultra and Workspace customers and is expanding to Pro users in stages.
Check three things first
First, confirm that notebook access has actually opened on the accounts your team uses.
Second, decide the role of notebooks: a tool for summarizing search results, or a workspace that connects your internal materials.
Third, if your analysis needs code execution, check the supported plans and data handling terms separately.
Without these distinctions, it's easy to overestimate your rollout scope just from the news that a feature is available.
What this update means
Search is changing from a screen where you find answers to one where you keep working.
Gemini Notebook is heading toward putting research material and search context into a single flow. You can first see the effect in source-dependent work such as researching team documents, monitoring competitors, and organizing interview material.
On the other hand, differences in availability by account and region still remain. Before adopting it, it's safer to compare web and app results using the same materials and to check sharing permissions and retention policies.
