xAI's Grok 4.6 tied Claude Opus 5 for first place on the Artificial Analysis Agentic Index on August 21, 2026 (local time). Both models scored 59. The Tesla fan community account Tesla Owners Silicon Valley shared the news, credited Artificial Analysis as the source, and drew more than 290,000 views.
The official Artificial Analysis comparison page confirms that the two models' Agentic Index scores are tied at 59. Grok 4.6 is measured at "High" reasoning effort and Claude Opus 5 at "Max" reasoning effort.
What is the Agentic Index?
The Agentic Index is a separate metric run by Artificial Analysis. It is different from the better-known overall Intelligence Index, where Claude Opus 5 leads at 63, followed by Grok 4.6 and GPT-5.6 Sol at 61. The Agentic Index, by contrast, isolates the abilities needed for real agent workflows, such as tool use, planning, and autonomous multi-step task execution.
Mixing up the two metrics can lead to overblown readings like "Grok 4.6 beat Claude overall." More precisely, the models are tied only on the agentic task metric, and Opus 5 still leads on overall intelligence.
Why this metric matters now
xAI has recently been expanding its autonomous work tools, Grok Build and Grok Bot, one after another. The ability to call tools and finish a task from start to end is now directly tied to product competitiveness, beyond just answering questions. Anthropic has likewise been expanding agent-style product lines such as Claude Cowork and Claude Code, so this tie can be read as a sign that the two camps are starting to compete head-on in the market for practical agents.
What this means in practice
If your development team is adopting agent tools, don't look only at the overall benchmark ranking when choosing a model. Check the sub-metrics that match your actual workload. For work centered on plain conversation and research, the Intelligence Index is the more useful reference. For work built around tool calls and multi-step automation, the Agentic Index is.
What still needs confirmation
Artificial Analysis is an independent benchmarking organization, but its methodology and weighting are updated continuously. Keep in mind that a benchmark score is a snapshot in time and may differ from how a model feels in real production workloads. It's also possible the two models' rankings will spread apart again in the next update.
