Replit's official account announced a new feature on X at 11:01 p.m. KST on August 19, 2026.
"Replit Free Mode, powered by @OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna. Let us make intelligence accessible to everyone."
The post drew 740,000 views.
Who is Free Mode actually free for?
Despite the name, Free Mode is not a new free plan.
According to Fortune, it's offered as a default mode to Core ($20/month) and Pro ($100/month) subscribers.
It's designed so that chatting, brainstorming, and simple tasks don't use up your main AI budget (tokens).
| Plan | Monthly price | Free Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $20 | Included by default |
| Pro | $100 | Included by default |
GPT-5.6 Luna and the 80% price cut
Michele Catasta, Replit's president and head of AI, told Fortune:
"A lot of tasks don't require the frontier-level intelligence. It just requires smaller models that are faster and more affordable."
He called GPT-5.6 Luna very powerful and reliable and described Free Mode as radical.
OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna's cost by 80% on July 30, 2026, and Catasta cited that as the trigger for the launch.
How to protect your token budget with Free Mode
If your team is on Replit Core or Pro, it's worth splitting up your work.
Hand off tasks that don't need top-tier performance, such as cleaning up meeting notes, brainstorming, and checking a quick snippet, to Free Mode.
Save your main token budget for work that needs precision, like refactoring or architecture design.
Usage limits and billing figures haven't been officially confirmed. Check your dashboard to see how it actually applies.
Catasta hints at more launches with OpenAI
Catasta described this announcement as a starting point.
"This is the first of many launches we're going to be doing together."
Dataconomy and Reuters covered it the same day.
No timing for the next joint launch has been given. If you manage a team's budget, now is the time to start with Free Mode.
