Getting Started with a Local Training Setup in Unsloth Studio.

A guide to starting local model training in Unsloth Studio by first checking your data, GPU requirements, and a small test run, to reduce failed training runs and wasted resources.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Confirm your hardware can train

Check the currently supported GPUs and operating systems in the official requirements. Keep in mind that being able to run inference is different from being able to train.

  2. 2

    Prepare a small, verifiable dataset

Review personal data, copyright, and formatting errors first, and use a few samples to confirm the input and output format is correct.

  3. 3

Watch loss and output changes in a short run

Do not start with a long run. Use a short training run to catch out-of-memory errors, missing data, and output quality problems.

  4. 4

Separate the release scope of model and data

Before exporting trained results, separately review the base model license, data usage rights, and how widely you will share them.

Being able to run inference doesn't mean you can train

Unsloth's current requirements distinguish between Studio's inference and data processing and the conditions for training support. For a training machine, check GPU and memory requirements first, and for environments outside the supported range, follow the alternatives in the official guide.

Finish your first run with a small dataset

Before training, check the format and permissions of your data, then use a short run to look at how the loss changes and at sample outputs. If problems show up at this stage, fix the data before changing the model size or learning rate.

A training server is not a public server

Even a training UI you run on your own PC needs access control if you expose it to the network. Set up authentication and an access scope only when you need to share it, and record where your data and results are stored.
