MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol that standardizes how LLM applications connect to external data sources and tools.

What does MCP connect?

MCP does not change the model itself. It is a specification that defines the interface through which a client that uses a model connects to tools and data. Its key benefit is that you can manage connection targets and permissions separately.

How is it different from a custom API integration?

Each custom API integration needs its own implementation for every client. MCP focuses on a shared agreement so that compatible clients can discover and call the same server capabilities.

Set up permissions before you adopt it

Connecting a tool means granting it the power to act. Separate read and write permissions, approval steps, and rules for handling external content on a per-server basis.
