ChatGPT Sites Now Host MCP Servers and Plugins: Build With One Sentence and Install on Web, Mobile, and Desktop

Key takeaways

  1. 1You can build and host MCP servers and Plugin Extensions directly in ChatGPT Sites.
  2. 2The requested tool is built as an MCP server, deployed to Sites, then converted to a plugin and installed in ChatGPT.
  3. 3Plugin hosting is supported on all plans, and Business and Enterprise workspaces may need admin permission settings.

ChatGPT Sites can now host MCP servers and Plugin Extensions directly. OpenAI's Max Stoiber, at 7:43 AM (KST) on October 1, 2026, showed a flow that goes from a single sentence, "build me a to-do list for use in ChatGPT," to making an MCP server, deploying it to Sites, and installing it as a plugin in ChatGPT on web, mobile, and desktop.

From an MCP server to an installed plugin with one sentence

If you ask @sites build me a to-do list for use in ChatGPT, these steps follow.

  1. It builds an MCP server that includes Plugin Extensions.
  2. It deploys the MCP server it built to ChatGPT Sites.
  3. It turns the MCP server into a ChatGPT plugin.
  4. You install the plugin in ChatGPT on web, mobile, or desktop.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the specification ChatGPT uses to connect to outside tools and data. You can learn more at MCP (Model Context Protocol): meaning and definition.

The same day at 1:44 PM (KST), OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux also announced that you can now build and deploy MCP servers directly with ChatGPT, and that you can limit access to whoever you want or share it with the world.

How to attach an MCP server to a Site and install the plugin

  1. In Work in ChatGPT on the web, or Work or Codex in the desktop app, create a new Site or open an existing one.
  2. Ask ChatGPT or Codex to add an MCP server to the Site, and describe what information the tool can read and what it can change. For example, for a team handbook Site you can ask for a policy search tool, and for a project dashboard you can ask, "add a tool so the team can read milestones and change their status from chat."
  3. Test the tool it built with sample data.
  4. When the Site owner publishes the Site, the plugin is created. If you added a tool to a Site that is already published, publish it again.
  5. On the plugin card, click Install and finish connecting your account.
  6. Call the plugin in a conversation and ask your question. Plugins you made gather under Plugins → Personal → Created by you.

Plugin hosting is available on all plans. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, an admin may need to turn on the Use plugins and Create plugins with MCPs permissions under Workspace settings → Permissions & roles. To share with a colleague, invite them under Plugins → Personal → Created by you → (your plugin) → Share and give them permission to view the Site. This feature was announced at DevDay and is rolling out to accounts in turn.

ChatGPT takes on running the server too

ChatGPT takes over the burden of setting up and running a server yourself. ChatGPT is turning into a personal software platform where you build and attach the functions you need.

As Max Stoiber put it, ChatGPT is becoming flexible software that anyone can reshape to their own needs. The flow of making the tool you need in conversation, deploying it to a Site, and attaching it as a plugin to the ChatGPT you use every day shows that change.
