OpenAI cut the price of GPT-5.6 Sol in half.
But the discount conditions are odd.
It applies on only two platforms: OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway.
ChatGPT and direct OpenAI API calls aren't covered.
Half Off on Two Gateways, Through September 18
AI infrastructure analysis outlet SemiAnalysis reported the news at 2:36 PM (KST) on August 18, 2026.
The report says OpenAI is discounting GPT-5.6 Sol 50% only on OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway.
Here are the prices.
The list price is $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.
After the discount, the standard rate falls to $2.50 / $15.
On the flex tier, it drops as low as $1.25 / $7.50.

The discount runs from August 17 to September 18, 2026.
The same notice appeared in Vercel's official changelog.

Why Only Two Platforms?
SemiAnalysis called it "clever marketing."
OpenRouter and Vercel account for a small share of OpenAI's total token usage.
But they're also the two data sources the industry most often references when estimating AI model market share.
The point is that if GPT-5.6 Sol usage on these two more than doubles, investors could read it as OpenAI gaining share against Anthropic.
The analysis is that the goal is likely improving share metrics more than actually growing revenue.
The Half Price Is Automatic, Direct API Is Excluded
If you're already using GPT-5.6 Sol through OpenRouter or Vercel AI Gateway, now is the time to cut costs.
Call openai/gpt-5.6-sol with no extra setup and the discount applies automatically.
If you call the OpenAI API directly or use ChatGPT, though, it doesn't apply to you.
No Extension Announced; the Marketing Reading Is Separate
OpenAI hasn't said whether the discount will be extended past September 18.
SemiAnalysis's "marketing intent" reading is industry analysis, not OpenAI's official position.
