Kimi K3, the largest open-weight model in the world, is now selectable in GitHub Copilot. The 2.8-trillion-parameter model from China's Moonshot AI is specialized for agentic coding. However, the rollout was paused and then resumed on announcement day, so some accounts do not see it yet.
2.8 Trillion Parameters and a 1M Context: What Is This Model?
Kimi K3 is Moonshot AI's latest open-weight model. It is known as one of the largest open models available, with a 2.8-trillion-parameter MoE design, a 1 million (1M) token context, and native vision. It is rated as delivering frontier-level capability on agentic coding tasks, and in Copilot, Fireworks AI handles hosting.
Pricing: $3 Input, $0.30 Cached, $15 Output (per 1M Tokens)
Usage-based billing is expected to apply when you use it in Copilot. It is $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, at the provider's list prices. The fact that the official docs do not yet list a price table is covered below.
| Item | Price (per 1M tokens) |
|---|---|
| Input | $3 |
| Cached input | $0.30 |
| Output | $15 |
Which Plans and Editors Can Use It?
It is rolling out in stages to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise. Supported clients include VS Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the cloud agent, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse, and you can pick it from the model selector.
Off by Default for Enterprises: Why Admins Must Turn It On
On Copilot Business and Enterprise, Kimi K3 is disabled by default. An admin has to turn on the Kimi K3 policy in Copilot settings before it shows up for the organization. GitHub recommends reviewing security, compliance, and data governance requirements before adopting open-weight models.
Paused on Announcement Day: The GitHub Actions Incident and the Missing Official Listing
There is one thing to note. Right after the announcement on August 6 (local time), GitHub paused the rollout and then resumed it, citing its response to a GitHub Actions incident. K3 is not yet in the official supported-model table or pricing docs, and the only Moonshot model listed is the existing Kimi K2.7 Code. That means the announcement does not yet come with a stable documentation contract.
In other words, the current state is "announced, with the rollout in progress (availability varies by account)." It is not unusual if the model does not yet appear on a particular account.
So Can You Use It? What to Watch For
To use it for real work, check three things. First, whether your Copilot plan is Pro or higher. Second, if you are on Business or Enterprise, whether your admin has turned the policy on. Third, whether K3 actually appears in the model selector. Right after the announcement, the variation between accounts is large. Until pricing and the model table are formally reflected in the official docs, it is safest to treat it as a preview of what is coming.
