On October 7, 2026, OpenAI introduced GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in the ChatGPT Chat tab. Depending on the question, a single answer can combine text, visuals such as images, and interactive elements such as buttons, forms, and charts. OpenAI also described a flow where useful parts of an answer appear progressively instead of the whole answer arriving at once.
The point is not to turn chat into an app screen every time. A comparison request can get a side-by-side view and a question that needs explaining can get an interactive diagram, but a question that suits plain text still gets a text answer. Whatever the format, the direction is to shape the answer around the question.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Intelligent UI Video
You can watch the 70-second video at the top of OpenAI's official announcement page below. It is the official video showing the screens and interactions Intelligent UI is aiming for.
The Screen Appears Progressively as the Answer Is Built
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 builds responses step by step. It shows the helpful content first, then adds the rest of the answer. This applies not only to text but also to answers that include interactive elements. Instead of waiting for a long answer and receiving the finished screen all at once, you can read and use what arrives first while the rest is still being built.
The official page also introduces a Bill splitter demo in which a user enters the number of people and the cost of the food to split the bill. It is an example of a chat response working like a calculation form, showing that the answer can offer a tool you can use right inside it rather than only explaining in sentences.
A Chat Experience That Picks the Right Format for the Question
Intelligent UI was not presented as a fixed template applied to every question. OpenAI explains that GPT-6 can combine graphics, clickable buttons and forms, charts, and interactive experiences inside the conversation, depending on the nature of the question. If there are things to compare, it shows them side by side, and if a concept needs unpacking, it builds a diagram.
So it is more accurate to see this as a feature that widens the answer format when needed than to read it as "every ChatGPT answer turns into a mini app." When a format would only make the answer more complicated, ChatGPT can still respond with mostly text, as before.
44% Faster Time to First Response on Web-Search Questions
OpenAI announced that, on questions that require web search, GPT-6 Instant started answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. This does not mean the total completion time of every request fell by 44%. It is OpenAI's own evaluation of the time until the first response begins on web-search questions.
OpenAI also said more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. That scale, together with the change in how responses are delivered, shows the context of an update meant to refine ChatGPT's main experience.
GPT-6 Sol on Paid Plans, GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go
At the time of the announcement, OpenAI said a global staged rollout would begin in the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, and expand to Free and Go the next day. Paid plans are assigned GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go are assigned GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI described both models as tailored to the Chat experience for everyday conversation.
On Enterprise, the timing of availability can vary with workspace administrator settings. The scope of this change is also the ChatGPT Chat experience. OpenAI said the models powering Work and Codex are not changing with this announcement, so it is worth keeping the scope distinct rather than reading it as a model change across the whole product line.
What to Check in ChatGPT
- Answer format: Combines text, visuals, and interactive UI to fit the question.
- Response flow: Shows useful content first and renders the rest progressively.
- Model assignment: As announced, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol, and Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna.
- Rollout: Starts with paid plans and expands to Free and Go in stages.
- Scope: An update to the Chat tab experience; the Work and Codex models are not affected.
Alongside the model update, OpenAI laid out a direction in which the conversation interface itself becomes part of the answer. When GPT-6 Intelligent UI reaches your own account will depend on the announced staged schedule, your plan, and your workspace settings.
