The Incident: "We Beat Jane Street's Top 10% Traders"
At 4:21 a.m. on August 11, 2026, a post by X (formerly Twitter) user Michael Wang (@michaelwangelo) spread with 360,000 views, 1,000 likes, and 72 reposts. He said, "Today we're launching Prodigy Research (YC S26)," and that "we're training the best foundation model in the world for quantitative finance." He went on to claim that "our AI quant outperforms Jane Street's top 10% of traders and has already achieved returns of more than 100% in live trading." Phrasing that flatly asserts having "beaten" a named person or company is common in early-stage startup self-promotion, but it's rare for the methodology and the party that verified it to be presented alongside. We looked at how well this post matches the facts, within what can be confirmed from public material.
Context: Right in the Middle of the "AI Will Do the Trading" Trend
According to the Y Combinator official company page, Prodigy Research really is part of the Summer 2026 (S26) batch, and its co-founders are brothers Michael Wang (CEO) and Yuhua Wang (CTO). The company website prodigy.markets says Michael Wang researched frontier models at Google DeepMind and worked as a quant and securities trader at Jane Street. That is itself independent evidence supporting the company's existence and its batch. But this "AI replaces or outperforms traders" narrative isn't new. The same YC 2026 batch includes several startups with similar positioning, such as Standard Signal, which bills itself as "a hedge fund where AI researches and executes every trade," and Cohesion, which touts a public equities agent. In other words, Prodigy's claim is less an isolated issue than a typical promotional line from the "AI quant" boom, where competition for funding is fierce.
YC Confirmed, 108% Is a Self-Reported Claim
Starting with what's confirmed, that Prodigy Research is a company actually in the YC S26 batch is independently confirmed on YC's official website. The founder's Jane Street, DeepMind, and Apple experience also appears in the company's own introductory material, but that's information the company supplied itself, and we couldn't cross-check it against third-party background verification (public proof of career beyond LinkedIn, for example). The problem is what comes next. The comparison "outperforms Jane Street's top 10% of traders" and the figure "over 100% returns in live trading" are repeated only on the company website and the founder's own X post, and we found no public material on the period, sample, or benchmark methodology used to produce them. The company website gives specific figures, "+108% in 2 months with a delta-neutral strategy, no down weeks," but we couldn't confirm through searches the existence of an audit report or third-party verification (an accounting firm, an exchange, an independent research firm) backing it.
The comparison target itself, "Jane Street's top 10% of traders," is also hard to verify. Jane Street is a privately held proprietary trading firm that doesn't publish performance by trader, so there's no way to independently reproduce from outside what the "top 10%" baseline is. We found no material in search results of Jane Street officially commenting or responding on this comparison. Companies named in this kind of comparison often don't respond, and this appears to fall in that category. Posts by other X users endorsing the promotional post (to the effect of "Michael is ex-Jane Street, so he'd know") also turned up, but these are only a founder's acquaintances vouching for him and aren't the same as independent performance verification.
| Claim | Evidence confirmed? |
|---|---|
| Prodigy Research is in the YC S26 batch | Confirmed — YC official company page |
| Founder is ex-Jane Street, DeepMind, and Apple | Partly confirmed — company's own introduction, no third-party career verification |
| "Outperforms Jane Street's top 10% of traders" | Unverified — methodology and comparison basis undisclosed, no Jane Street response |
| "100%+ (+108% per the website) returns in live trading" | Unverified — no audit or third-party verification, self-reported figure |
| "Never had a losing week" | Unverified — self-reported, can't be independently confirmed |
The 108% Return Is the Company's Own Claim
We wrote this article by cross-checking the original X post, the YC official company page, and the company website. The company's existence and YC affiliation are supported by independent sources, but the key marketing claims, the returns and the "edge over Jane Street," rest entirely on the company's own announcements, and no audit report, third-party benchmark, or trade record that would verify them has been confirmed. Early-stage startups' live-trading return claims often cover a short sample period (about two months here) and aren't subject to the disclosure obligations of regulated asset managers, so whether the same strategy holds over the long term and with large capital is a separate question. When you come across claims like this, get in the habit of checking whether the methodology is disclosed, whether there's an independent audit, and the sample period together. For now, leaving it as "cannot be confirmed / unverified" is the accurate description, and it's a matter that needs an update if the company releases specific verification material later.
